Abstract | As part of a state-wide longitudinal study of student goal attainment, Montgomery College surveyed 3,975 students in 1976 who had initially enrolled in fall of 1972. Sixty percent responded. Interviews with non-respondents showed that the academically able were more likely to respond, but that questionnaire item responses varied little. Data included demographic information, goals upon entry to the college, and current goal outcomes. Major goals were (1) graduating with an A. A. degree, (2) career training and employment, and (3) transfer to a four-year institution. Of the 53% who originally planned to graduate, 42% had earned degrees or certificates. Among career-goal students, 79% held full-time jobs, and of these, 73% reported jobs related to their college programs. These students felt preparation was good, but college placement efforts poor. Of those intending to transfer, 76% did so, with most continuing in majors related to their community college studies. The research did not assess outcomes of the college beyond initial student aims, outside factors contributing to student success, or ask if the unemployed were seeking work. Entrance goals reported after three and one-half years may have been subject to change.
